Our understanding of sustainability
For us, sustainability means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the opportunities of future generations. To achieve this, the three dimensions of environmental, economic, and social issues must be considered equally.
Our goal is to protect the unique biodiversity of the Peruvian ecosystem while creating socially just working conditions by promoting sustainable farming practices based on fair and long-term partnerships with our more than 150 small-scale organic family farms.
Together we can make such a positive impact – every cup of ALTOMAYO organic coffee makes a difference!
Since 1998, our Arabica beans have been sourced from 100% certified organic cultivation in the Peruvian highlands. Through mixed-crop cultivation and agroforestry, we promote unique biodiversity and protect the delicate ecosystem. Different plants, trees, and shrubs thrive in harmony with one another to create a healthy and balanced ecosystem. This eliminates the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
These sustainable cultivation methods not only ensure the excellent taste of our organic coffee specialties, but also promote the long-term preservation of local biodiversity and the people living in harmony with it.
Learn moreWith our roots and values, we are committed to fair trade practices and long-term relationships that guarantee fair remuneration for small-scale organic coffee producing families in Peru, regardless of the fluctuations of the global market.
Through these fair and long-term partnerships and transparency, we improve living and working conditions on the numerous farms while simultaneously promoting sustainable organic coffee cultivation. Together, we are shaping a fair future.
Learn more As part of our sustainable approach, we support social projects together with our long-standing partners in Peru, primarily in the growing areas where our organic Arabica specialties are grown. Through direct contact with our organic coffee producer families and open communication, we ensure that our relationships are fair and transparent.
Through sponsorship and donations, we support selected projects in Peru, but also in Germany, that benefit people and nature.
Organic enjoyment for every taste
With the onset of colonization, and especially after the rise of large landowners in the 17th and 18th centuries, the agricultural model changed fundamentally. A model based on export-oriented mass production was introduced. The previously characteristic diversification of agricultural production and integration with the forest declined more and more. At the same time, traditional knowledge and practices were given less and less space, and homogeneous crops became the norm.
Today, native forests in Peru are generally not considered an integral part of the productive lands of rural properties. They are mainly located in areas less suitable for conventional agricultural development.
Against this backdrop, agroforestry systems embrace various aspects of traditional agricultural systems and integrate sophisticated elements of agroecology. Harnessing the power of nature, agroforestry systems combine the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources and utilize the productive potential of native forest formations, whether plantations or natural forests.
As in other regions of Latin America, economic activities such as logging, the creation of pastures for livestock, and slash-and-burn agriculture to establish monocultures are the main causes of deforestation in Peru. Deforestation can therefore only be effectively combated if alternatives for more sustainable ecosystem management are also offered. This is why practices such as agroforestry systems are so important.
Coffee cultivation in these systems ensures a decent and sustainable livelihood for smallholder producer families in Peru. The sale of the coffee produced there provides the families with an income, while the diversification of production typical of these systems increases food security, as the coffee is produced for their own consumption and high-quality food is provided to the families' tables.
Reliable harvests and incomes underscore the economic value of preserving biodiversity and using it in a non-intensive, short-term way. Sustainable agriculture transforms producers into protectors of the rainforest.
The organic Arabica coffee beans for our organic coffee specialties "Plantagen Kaffee & Espresso" and "Espresso Plantación" thrive in advanced agroforestry systems that mimic natural processes. At the same time, the system creates protected habitats for many animal and plant species and strengthens the resilience of forests in the growing areas against the various impacts of climate change.
Agroforestry systems not only enable cultivation without synthetic fertilizers but also contribute to healthy, organically grown products with excellent taste. The combination of trees and coffee bushes promotes nutrient cycling, improves soil quality, and protects against erosion.
An advanced cultivation method that not only impresses with its positive sustainability aspects, but also produces a special organic coffee quality that can be perceived with all the senses in the cup.
